A member of the well-known Saward family, Mrs. Reid was the second child and the first girl baby to be born at Montagu and the first child christened in the Montagu Church of England. She married at the age of 17 and was the mother of eight sons and seven daughters, of whom one son, Samuel (Launceston), and four daughters, Rose (Mrs. E. Sons and daughters who predeceased Mrs. Reid were: George, Charles, Thomas, Douglas, William, Wilfred and James (killed in action, World War I); Rachel (Mrs. B. Young), Ethel (Mrs. J. Carroll) and Annie (Mrs. W. Amos). The late Mrs. Reid and her husband settled at Irishtown, where they combined farming with a post-office, general store and butchery, and delivered goods to far distant farms and settlements. They had built up a thriving business, when death claimed Mr. Reid at the early age of 46, leaving Mrs. Reid to care for 15 children, the eldest son being about 20 years of age. Mrs. Reid, who was a devout, churchwoman, gave the land on which All Saints Church of England, Irishtown, is built. The rector of Smithton (Rev. H. D. Butler) conducted the funeral service at the Irishtown cemetery on March 10, after a service at All Saints Church. The large cortege included a great number of relatives. Carriers were four grandsons, Messrs. Clarrie and Murray Reid and Henry and James Medwin. Pallbearers were Messrs. J. K. Carroll, E. O'Halloran, Roy and Frank Kay.

Of 15 children, six are living. They are Charles (Ulverstone), Samuel (Launceston), Rose (Mrs. E. Matthews, Irishtown), Annabella (Mrs. E. Medwin, Latrobe), Margaret (Mrs. Eddie, Avoca), and Lillian (Mrs. Mummery, Myrtle ford, Vic.). Mrs. Reid's father did much towards the building of St. George's Church, Montagu, and Mrs. Reid gave the land on which All Saints' Church, Irishtown, was built. She still attends All Saints' when her health will permit. Mrs. Reid enjoys the respect of all sections of the community.

- [S23] TROVE, Circular Head Chronicle 17 January 1945, OBITUARY. -- MR. D. W. REID , IRISHTOWN. -- The death occurred on Monday, January 8, after an illness extending over some months, of Mr. Douglas Walter Reid, at the age of 58. He was the fifth son of Mrs. and the late Mr. H. M. Reid. He leaves a wife, who was formerly Miss Emily May Haywood, and a daughter, Miss Joyce Reid. For many years Mr. Reid was in charge of the local post-office, and was well known for his courteous and obliging manner, his integrity and uprightness of character in connection with his work. He was a staunch and devout adherent of the Church of England, and held the position, over a period of years, of minister’s warden, honorary secretary and treasurer of All Saints’ Church, Irishtown. A keen horticulturist, he specialised in the culture of dahlias, spring bulbs and other flowers, and was a successful exhibitor at various shows. Possessing a cheerful and kindly disposition, he was interested in and always ready to assist any project for the advancement of the district, his help being given quietly and unostentatiously. His death is a distinct loss to the community. The funeral, attended by a very large and representative gathering, took place on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Irishtown cemetery, services at All Saints’ Church and at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. C. Mitchell of Smithton. At the church Mrs. Packham, Smithton, presided at the organ, and Mr. Reid’s favorite hymn, “Abide with me,’ was sung. Bro. O. Ollington, Noble Grand of the I.O.O.F. Lodge, Smithton, of which Mr. Reid was a member, conducted the lodge service at the graveside. The carriers were Messrs. Murray, Kenneth, Clarence and Geoff Reid, Phil and Fred Young, all nephews, and the pallbearers Messrs. Frank and Roy Kay, M. Willis and A. E. Flint. The chief mourners were Messrs. Rowland and Phil Haywood, B. Young, W. Amos, E. Matthews (brothers-in-law), W. Amos, junr., and Ben Haywood (nephews). Messrs. Wilfred and Chas. Reid (brothers) were unable to attend through illness, and another surviving brother, Samuel, of Mt. Hicks, was also unable to be present. Surviving sisters are Annabella (Mrs. E. H . Medwin), Rose (Mrs. E. Matthews), Lily (Mrs. J. Mummery) and Margaret (Mrs. Eddy). The great number of wreaths, telegrams, letters and cards received testify to the esteem in which Mr. Reid was held and to the sympathy felt for his family. Among the wreaths were tributes from All Saints’ Church, Irishtown Patriotic Committee, Circular Head Child Welfare Association, staff of Smithton Post Office and the Irishtown branch of the C.W.A. Telegrams from the Senior G.F.S. and Junior G.F.S., St. Stephen’s Church, and Red Cross, all of Smithton, were included among the many received.
