Mr. Reid, who was an excellent swimmer, reached the shore in safety, but anxious for the preservation of those clinging to the boat, he returned to the scene of their disaster. He afterwards went on shore, and in making for the boat again he suddenly disappeared, and was seen no more. Mr. Simpson was also drowned: he was an experienced swimmer, and stripped himself, but was soon lost sight of: one of the men, likewise perished in the river. By this afflicting accident two large families have been bereaved of their most promising members.

Note | | Circular Head Chronicle 25 March 1953:
DISTRICT FAMILIES -- THE REID FAMILY. -- James H. Reid, who leased Robbins Is. from the Van Diemen’s Land Co. about the year 1873, was the eldest and first of a family of four brothers and a sister who arrived in Circular Head from the Tamar River. Their grandfather and family had migrated to Tasmania from Scotland in the 1830's and had settled in the midlands on a property known as “Green Hill.” He also owned Richmond Hill at West Tamar. James Reid, who came to Circular Head with his wife and small son, was followed soon after by his brothers, William, Henry and Thomas, sister Annabella, their widowed mother, and an uncle, William Barrett.
After several years of adventuring among the islands and among other things lightering potatoes from Montagu to vessels anchored in Perkins Bay for shipment to as far as Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, hunting wild cattle on Three Hummock Is., game-hunting on King Is and mutton-birdlng on Trefoil and Steep Head, the brothers, William, Henry and Thomas, settled at Irishtown. William and Henry on a 320-acre property on the Inshtown road, and Thomas on a 200-acre adjoining property, known as “Blackwood”. The sister married a cousin, Hugh Murray who was probably the first schoolmaster at Smithton. The school was situated on the east bank of Duck River, south of Perkins Creek. On the early death of her husband, Mrs. Murray took up land at Fahey's Lane, where her grandsons still reside.
James H. Reid leased Robbins Is. for 46 years, until it was purchased by James Holyman. Two of his sons, William B and James took up Alcomie, where they literally carved out homes. The third son Charles Reid, and the only daughter (Mrs. M. Sampson), resided at Smithton.
Henry M. Reid married Miss Hannah Saward, of Montagu, whose death occurred recently at the age of 93. William Reid played a prominent part in the development of the Irishtown district, and with the late Robert Kay carried out a number of road construction works. He was associated with the late H. B Pithouse in fostering cricket at Irishtown. and for years gave a prize to the batsmen scoring centuries: he often had to hand the trophy to his nephews, Charles and Tom Reid. His eldest son. Walter, resides at Smithton. and another son in Melbourne, while his eldest daughter married the late R. G. Cotton.
The youngest of the four Reid brothers. Thomas, left no children, his only son dying at the age of five. |

He was accompanied by his infant son, as well as his brothers (William, Henry and Thomas), his mother and sister. His brothers later selected land at Irishtown. The late Mr. Reid's grandfather- the late Mr. James Reid - arrived in Tasmania by the brig Urania, which was under the command of Captain Newton, from Scotland in the year 1822, with his wife and family and brother-in-law (Mr. Hugh Murray), bringing with them all the merchandise necessary for a new settlement, and in addition a carpenter, blacksmith, a ploughman, and a shepherd, as well as domestics. They settled at Green Hill, on the Macquarie River, where Mr. Reid had a Crown lease of 1000 acres. He later resided at Richmond Hill, on the Tamar, where the late Mr. J. H. Reid was born. Esteemed Pioneer Passes:
An attack of mumps was responsible for the death at 6 a.m. on Thursday of an old and respected resident of Fahey's Lane in the person of Mrs, Annabella Murray, who had attained the age of 75 years. It is a century ago this year since deceased's grandfather, the late Mr, .James Reid, and his tradesmen servants, arrived in Van Diemen's Land by a privately chartered vessel and obtained a grant of 1000 acres on Richmond Hill, Tamar River, where Mrs. Murray was born. Her husband pre-deceased her thirty years ago. Her hospitality and kindness endeared her to all those with whom she came into contact. Virgin bush possessed Fahey's Lane when she and her two surviving sons, Alex, and Hugh, decided to carve out a home there, and the flourishing district now bears testimony to the degree in which they succeeded. She had four brothers, namely, Messrs. James H. Reid (Smithton), W. J. C. Reid (Devonport), Thomas Reid, (Irishtown), and the late Henry Reid, late of Irishtown. Mr. Geo. Conlon, Smithton, is a first cousin. The funeral will take place to-day at the Irishtown cemetery. - [S23] TROVE, Advocate (Burnie, Tas. : 1890 - 1954) Tue 18 Sep 1923, Last Sad Rites.
The remains were laid to rest in the Irishtown cemetery on Saturday after noon of Mrs. Annabella Murray, who passed away on Thursday morning at her home in Fahey's lane after a long and charitable life. The cortege was of considerable length, and the floral tributes numerous and beautiful. The Rev. A. E. Innes officiated at the graveside, and referred to the sterling qualities that the deceased lady possessed, The pall-bearers were Messrs. Alex. Woods, Michael Fahey, Maurice Sampson and Eldred Marthick, whilst. Messrs. Martin O'Halloran, T. Fahey, Alf. Spinks and Denis Carroll, jun., bore the remains, to their last resting place. The deceased's husband was the late Mr. Hugh Murray, who pre-deceased her 38 years ago. It is interesting to recall that he was the first State school teacher to arrive in Mowbray Ward. The only school serving Smithton and Irishtown at the time was at Scotchtown, and it was in the building there that the late Mr. Murray taught. The old building still stands, and is one of the antiquities of Circular Head. It is now occupied by Messrs. Theo. Wells and W. Lee. Later, Mr. Murray was transferred to the Black River State School, where he passed away. It was then that Mrs. Murray went to Irishtown, and after residing with her brother, Mr. Thos. Reid, for some years took up land in Fahey's lane in conjunction with her two sons.

- [S23] TROVE, Launceston Examiner 29 Sep 1914, There passed away on Sunday at her home, "Kia-Ora," Lyttleton-street, Mrs. Clara C. Murray, widow of the late Mr. David Murray. M.H.A. Mrs. Murray, who had reached the advanced age of 88 years, had been ailing for several years, although her mind was remarkably active. She was a daughter of one of the early pioneers of Victoria and Tasmania - Mr. James Reid - who resided at his beautiful home at Richmond Hill, Sidmouth, on the banks of the Tamar. She married Mr. David Murray, M.H.A., the ceremony taking place in the old but pretty church at Sidmouth, which has recently been re-built. Her husband pre-deceased her some years back. She preserved a keen interest in all the events of life, and her love and knowledge of the culture of flowers were remarkable. Even to the last she called each by its technical name. She bestowed wonderful care and attention on her flower garden, and from time to time sent to foreign countries for specimens which interested her. There remains a splendid collection of flora. To those who loved her she has left the memory of a beautiful life. Her circle of friends was large, and she was beloved by every body, her sweet, gentle nature being the most prominent of her many splendid qualities. Mrs. Murray was the mother of eight sons and four daughters. There are two daughters alive, one being Miss Murray, and the other Mrs. Clarence Lyne. Of the sons, Mr. George Murray is a solicitor, practising at Devonport, Mr. Trevor L. Murray is associated with the Commercial Bank of Australia, and the others follow agricultural pursuits. There are 21 grandchildren. The funeral will take place this afternoon.

- [S23] TROVE, Daily Telegraph (Launceston) 26 Oct 1896, Death of Mr David Murray.— It would seem that the list of losses of old Launceston identities this year was never to have a break. Yesterday it was noticed that the flags of the shipping and of the Post Office were at half-mast, and enquiry proved that this was a mark of respect to the late Mr David Murray, who was well known in shipping circles. Mr Murray, who at the time of his death was 73 years of age, arrived in the colony when an infant of two, being a son of one of the earliest Tasmanian pioneers. He leaves eight, sons and three daughters, all of whom are living. One is a lawyer at Devonport, another is engaged at the Bank of Australasia, and other sons are following agricultural pursuits in the other colonies. Mr Murray had three sisters in Launceston, Mrs. Charles Harris, Mrs John Lyne, and Miss Murray, who has a ladies' school in Tamar-Street. Deceased was for some years a member of Parliament, and represented the district of Selby. He was a relation of the Rev. Wallace Murray, of New Norfolk, and cousin of the late H. T. A. Murray, police magistrate. His friends, who are very numerous, as well as his immediate relatives, unite in crediting him with having been a good-hearted man, while the latter testify to his having proved the best of husbands and fathers. The immediate cause of death is attributed to a cold caught on Saturday week when, in company with Mr Lyne, he attended the late Capt. Tulloch's funeral. Inflammation of the lungs set in, and he died at a quarter to 11 on Saturday morning, although Drs, Maddox, Hogg, and Johnson were called in.
- [S23] TROVE, Launceston Examiner 26 Oct 1896, Obituary.- On Saturday morning Mr.David Murray, a very old and prominent resident of Launceston, passed away at his residence, Lyttleton-street, after a short illness. Deceased attended the funeral of the late Captain James Tulloch on Saturday week, and caught a severe cold, which confined him to his bed. He was attended by Drs. Maddox and Johnson (Evandale), but rapidly sank, and died as stated. Mr.Murray, who was born in Edinburgh, arrived in Tasmania in 1826, when only 12 months old, with his parents, and, with the exception of representing the Selby electorate in the House of Assembly for some time nearly 30 years ago, he always led a retired life, although he took a keen interest in public affairs. Deceased has had a family of 12, 11 of whom are alive, there being eight sons and three daughters. Three of the family are married and reside in the neighbouring colonies, whilst Messrs.G. W Murray, solicitor at West Devonport, and T. B. Murray in the Bank of Australasia, Launceston, are sons, and Mrs. R. Sams, Hobart, is a daughter. The remaining sons are engaged in farming pursuits in Tasmania, and the third daughter is unmarried. Mr.Murray also leaves three sisters, one of whom is the wife of Mr. J.W. Lyne,of Launceston. The flags on shipping in port and at the Marine Board office yesterday were dipped out of respect to the memory of Mr. Murray. The funeral will take place this afternoon.

- [S23] TROVE, Circular Head Chronicle Wed 6 Oct 1926, OBITUARY.THE LATE Mrs. J. H. REID. Mrs. James Henry Reid, who passed away at Smithton recently at the age of 78 years, was born at Westbury. Her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs.Godfrey, went to England, taking her with them, and she spent five years of her childhood In London. Her mother died in London, and her father brought her back to Tasmania. They lived at Westbury for some time, Mr.Godfrey being a builder and contractor, and he built the Church of England there. When her father died she was under the guardianship of the Rev Montagu Williams of Westbury. She was educated at a private boarding school in Hobart, and came to Westbury, in the old horse coach days, for her holidays. She was married to the late James Henry Reid in the Westbury church. They lived on the Tamar for about a year and then came to Robbins Island, where 30 years were spent. It was owing to Mrs. Reid’s ill-health that they had to leave, and they took a farm at Irishtown for a while. Mrs.Reid spent the last six years of her life in Smithton. Mr. and Mrs. Reid were noted for their great hospitality at Robbins Island, which they had rented from the V.D.L. Co. for 43 years. The family consists of one daughter, Mrs.Sampson, and three sons, William, James and Charles. One daughter died on Robbins Island at the age of 2 years with diphtheria. The late Mrs Reid's favorite hymn was “Nearer My God to Thee.” There were many beautiful wreaths at the graveside ceremony. --- In Memoriam Service. At St. Stephen’s church on Sunday evening the Rev. A. Thompson held an In Memoriam service to the late Mrs. Reid. He said that Mrs. Reid was a Christian of the best type. She was known by her love of God. He had first place in her affections. She had lived on Robbins Island for 30 years and had brought up her family in the true Christian spirit. She had a special affection for little children. The Rector asked that God grant comfort to the relatives in their loss.

- [S23] TROVE, Burnie Advocate 25 May 1935, Mr. William Barrett Reid, of Alcomie, who died at Launceston yesterday, was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Reid, of George Town, and later of Robbins Island. The late Mr. Reid was born at George Town, and when three months old went with his parents to live on Robbins Island. This was 62 years ago. The family travelled in the schooner Dogmai. Mr. Reid's childhood was spent on the island. With Mr. E. Marthick and his brother, Mr. James Reid, Mr. Reid was one of the first to open up land in the Alcomie district, which is now a flourishing farming area. His estate includes a large farm at Alcomie. In his younger days, prior to taking up farming, the late Mr. Reid was an expert shipbuilder and carpenter. The last boat he built was on Robbins Island, for his father. The vessel is now owned by Messrs. Murfett Bros., of Smithton. Yachting and photography were his earlier hobbies. He was a keen supporter of the Presbyterian Church at Alcomie. The late Mr. Reid possessed a quiet, happy disposition, and was respected by all with whom he came into contact. Nineteen years ago he married Miss Lilian Burns, daughter of Mr. and the late Mrs. C. Burns,, of Irishtown. He leaves a widow and three sons, Allen Robert and Donald. There are two brothers, Messrs. James and Charles Reid, and a sister, Mrs. M. Sampson, of Smithton.
- [S23] TROVE, Burnie Advocate 25 May 1935, REID.-On May 24, at the General Hospital, Launceston, William Barrett, beloved husband of Lillian Elsie, and loving father of Allan, Robert and Donald Reid, of Alcomie; aged 62 years. FUNERALS. REID.-The funeral of the late William Barrett Reid will leave his late residence, Alcomie, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 26. for interment in the Irishtown cemetery. REID.-Brethren of Loyal Smithton I.O.O.F., No. 23, are requested to attend the funeral of the late Bro. W. B. Reid at Irishtown on Sunday, May 26, at 2.45 p.m. M. Sampson, sec.
- [S23] TROVE, Burnie Advocate 8 June 1935, The funeral of the late Mr. William B. Reid, of Alcomie, took place at Irishtown. The late Mr. Reid was the oldest son of the late Mr. J. H. Reid, whose grandfather arrived in Hobart Town from Scotland on January 14, 1823. Rev. A. P. Reynolds, Presbyterian minister at Stanley, officiated at the graveside. It was one of the largest funerals seen at Irishtown. The chief mourners were the three sons, Messrs. Allan, Robert, and Donald; two brothers, Messrs. James (Alcomie) and Charles (Smithton); brothers-in-law, Mr. M; Sampson, and father-in-law Mr. C. Burns (Irishtown). The carriers were three nephews, Messrs. Leonard, Clarence, and Ray Reid, and a cousin, Mr. Hugh Murray. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Ben Young, G. A. Kay, Ed. Marthick, and A. A. Spinks. There were many lovely flowers.
The late W. B. Reid was a baby three months of age when he was taken to Robbins Island by his parents, 62 years ago, in the schooner Dagmar, from the Tamar. With the party were his grandmother and his aunt Annabella Reid, his father having leased the island from the V.D.L. Co. J. R. [sic] Reid's two brothers, William and Henry, overlanded the cattle and horses from Belle View, East Tamar, to the island-no easy undertaking in those days of few roads and fewer bridges.
Thomas Reid, a younger brother, was left to finish his education at boarding school at Launceston. William Reid, Hobart, is the only one now living, being 84 years of age, and still hale and hearty. After residing for a few years with their brother on the island, William, Henry and Thomas purchased farms at Irishtown, at that time mostly dense bush, and left the island, which the late J. R. [sic] Reid rented from the V.D.L Co. for 43 years, until its sale to the firm of Holyman and Sons. The late W. B. Reid married Lilian Elsie Burns, daughter of Mr. C. Burns and the late Mrs. Burns. He leaves a widow and three sons; two brothers, James and Charles; and a sister, Mrs. M. Sampson. He took a keen interest in public matters. Yachting and photography were his chief hobbies, and in his single days he was never so happy as when taking a party of friends cruising, shooting and net fishing round the islands in the Island Belle, a 7-ton cutter he built for himself on Robbins Island. He was a carpenter and boat builder of no mean order. The last boat he built for his father was the well-known launch Welcome, now owned by Mr. Syd Murfet, of Smithton. He was a staunch supporter of the Presbyterian Church, and was christened by the late Rev. Garrett in the old Sidmouth church, West Tamar. This church his great grandfather, Jas. Reid, of Richmond Hill, was largely instrumental in having erected in the year 1841, and was fortunate in securing the Rev. Garrett as its first minister. Mr. Jas. Reid and family and his brother-in-law, Mr. Hugh Murray and family, came from Scotland in the brig. Urania, commanded by Captain Newton, in 1823, bringing with them all the merchandise for a new settlement, and also carpenter, blacksmith, shepherd and domestics. They first settled at Green Hill on the Macquarie River, where the late Jas. Reid had a Crown grant of 1000 acres, but later resided at Richmond Hill, on the Tamar, where he died in 1863. He, his wife and three sons were buried in the Sidmouth churchyard, and the names and dates on the headstones are still clear to read. The Sidmouth Presbyterian Church is built of stone. It was partly destroyed by fire many years ago, but has lately been restored and renovated, and is now regularly used for church services. The late W. B. Reid, with his brother James and Mr. Ed. Marthick were among the first to select land in the Alcomie district, about 1898, and it is now one of the best farming and grazing areas in the Circular head municipality. He was loved and respected by all who knew him, always ready to do a kind deed, and never unjust, trusting and loving his God to the last.
