NoteFrom Ancestry:
Mary Hollands (Grigsby) 1832- 1906 [these dates are clearly incorrect] and her children William, Jane, Thomas and John were left destitute after her husband John was transported as a convict to Australia and were living a terrible existence in the work house at Halling. Over the years James Atkinson a grazier in NSW Australia had written to Mary on John's behalf offering passage to join John in Australia. Convicts who had a record of good behavior could apply to have permission for their families to be brought to Australia at the governments expense, but Mary had always refused. When James Atkinson went to England in 1825 on business he took the trouble to see Mary to persuade her to accept. James wrote several letters on Mary's behalf he even called at the Home Secretary's office to plead her cause. In one of the petitions for passage he wrote that the reason Mary had refused offers was that in the work house she had been "wrought upon by evil and designing people." Did this mean she had been raped or held under some duress? The result was that Mary had given birth to twin girls they were baptised at Strood on 27 April 1823 as Mary Ann and Maria, daughters of Edward Baily of Strood (Strood baptism register p150/1/6 Kent archives). By then Mary may have been in the Strood work house 6 Kilometers north of East Malling. Before arrangements were made for the family's passage to Australia one of the twins, Maria, died age 2 yrs she was buried at Strood on 27 Jan 1826 as Maria Hollands from Strood poor house. (Strood burial register p150/1/29.) Mary and her children William, Jane, Thomas, John and Mary Ann, left England on the convict ship Grenada of 408 tons, built in Hull in 1810. The master was John Tracy ,the surgeon was Alexander Nisbet. The Grenada carried 88 female convicts about 12 wives and some 30 of their children. The Grenada picked up convicts at Woolwich on 4 Aug 1826, then sailed to Gravesend picking up free Passengers then sheltering, anchored at Downs, between Deal and Dover in Kent. They waited until conditions were favorable before they set sail on 8 Sept 1826. The surgeon of the ship Grenada, Dr Nisbet stated in his journal that the water taken on board was of poor quality and contaminated. Poor caulking of both deck and top sides which allowed the water to rush in from all sides, particularly forward, it ran in a stream through the hospital deck, and there was scarcely a dry berth in the whole ship. He wrote about the sea sickness aboard, as well as much bowel trouble. There are case histories of those who were sick . William 16 yrs, Jane 14 yrs, Thomas 11 yrs and John 6 yrs were very sick. Thomas recovered quickly, Mary and Mary Ann 3yrs have no record of being ill. Dr Nisbet stated that the whole family looked very unhealthy. He thought John might die as he became ill when they were anchored in Downs from Dysentery, he was pronounced cured on 18 Oct, Jane was kept in the ships hospital until they reached Hobart town where they could get fresh meat & veg. Both were given wine tonics daily. Maybe the reason the family survived was due to James Atkinson & Dr Nisbet. The Grenada reached Sydney via Hobart, on 23 Jan 1827 a voyage of 137 days. Four of the convict women died on the way the other 84 were disembarked at Sydney. After almost 7 years the Hollands family were together again.

  8. [S23] TROVE, Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate 16 February 1951, Mr. Swasbrick New Police Superintendent SYDNEY, Thursday. - Police Acting Superintendent John William Swasbrick, of Petersharm Police, has been appointed to replace Superintendent Salmon, of Newcastle. It is believed that Mr. Swasbrick will begin duty in Newcastle soon. Mr. Swasbrick has been with the New South Wales Police Force since 1921. His entire service has been with Sydney metropolitan police. Formerly of the C.I.B. Consorting Squad, he has had a prominent part in the solution of several murders, including the Alister Clarke case in 1928. He was one of the first Police Force members to join the military police intelligence section in 1941- 42.
  9. [S23] TROVE, The Newcastle Sun 21 May 1953, Supt. Swasbrick To Retire Soon -- Superintendent J. Swasbrick, officer-in-charge at Newcastle of the North-Eastern Police District, will begin his long service leave on June 28 prior to retirement. Superintendent Swasbrick joined the force early in 1921. when he was stationed at Regent St. Before his transfer to Newcastle two years ago he had spent his entire service in the metropolitan district. For more than 20 years he was with the C.I.B and took part in the investigation of many criminal cases. 'Detective work is never easy, but it was hard slogging in those days as we did not have the use of cars nor any of the modern aids to crime detection' he said today. Gangs Broken Up Superintendent Swasbrick said that the introduction of the Consorting Act had been of great assistance to the police force. 'Gangs of thugs, bashers and razor slashers were causing the police and the public grave concern but the result of the Consorting Act has been that the gangs as they were then active no longer exist.' he said. Traffic Problem 'Newcastle has much the same problems to face as the metropolitan area from a police point of view, Mr Swasbrick said. 'However, they are not so great here, and, in fact, the people of Newcastle are generally very amenable to law and order and very cooperative with the force. But the traffic problem here is one for some concern owing to the limited parking space available.' Superintendent Swasbrick served in World War I as a sergeant in the 13th battery Field Artillery. 2nd Division, from 1915 until he returned to Australia in May, 1919. Early in World War II he was seconded to the Military Police Intelligence Section and remained on that duty until 1944. After his retirement Superintendent Swasbrick will live in Sydney.

  6. [S23] TROVE, Ovens and Murray Advertiser (Beechworth, Vic) 13 Feb 1892, Fatality at Mitta Mitta. — We regret to record the death of Mr John Courtney,a well-known farmer and highly respected resident of the Mitta Mitta district. On Friday Mr Courtney and his son were taking a load of hay to a purchaser, the father being seated on top of the load, and the son driving. Going down a somewhat steep sidling, the horse became restive, and Mr Courtney, during the shifting of the load, fell heavily from his position to the ground, fracturing his skull in the fall, and expiring almost immediately. The deceased was held in very great respect in the district. He was a prominent leader in the Salvation Army movement in the district, in which he had the warmest interest. On the previous Sunday he was at the services held by the Army at Tallangatta, and had arranged to be present the Sunday following the accident, to assist in swearing-in recruits, and his untimely death has occasioned a widespread feeling of the very deepest regret. The late Mr Courtney leaves three or four sons and daughters, the eldest daughter being married. The funeral on Sunday was very largely attended.

  4. [S23] TROVE, Ovens and Murray Advertiser (Beechworth, Vic. : 1855 - 1918) Sat 9 Aug 1890, I am sorry to have to report the death of one of our residents, Mr Henry Lord, sen., who expired on the 18th ult., after suffering a long time from cancer. The remains were interred in the Mitta Mitta Cemetery on the 21st, and the funeral was one of the largest ever seen at Mitta Mitta. Even the poor Chinamen (some nine or ten) who had been renting ground off him for years followed their much respected landlord to his last resting-place to show their last sign of gratitude and respect for him. There was the greatest number of mourners that ever entered the cemetery at one time. Mr Lord came to this colony in 1855. For a number of years he principally followed up mining, being on Ballarat, Indigo, and several other well-known diggings; and when the goldfields began to fall off he turned selector and came to the Mitta and settled down in 1866. Finally he bought No. 2 Mitta station, where he has resided ever since. His familiar face will be missed by a good many, as he was respected by everyone.
