- [S23] TROVE, The Scrutineer and Berrima District Press 28 May 1913, On Monday last there passed away at her daughter's residence, Argyle Street, Moss Vale, an old identity of this district in the person of Mrs Mary Whatman, at the advanced age of 86 [sic] years. The deceased lady was considered to be the oldest native of the neighbourhood living in the district, having been born at what was then called Mugwell, between Werai and Sutton Forest. She was the sister of Mrs Shippley,'Spring Delight,' near Burrawang, and was twice married, having had five sons and three daughters by the first union and two daughters and one son to her second husband, ten of whom survive her. There are 73 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. With her death is removed one of the few remaining links with the past, when town of Moss Vale was unnamed and also uninhabited, and when Argyle Street was a portion of the main old road north and south from Sydney that passed by Eridge Park, to the east of Bowral; before Bong Bong church was built, and when the village, with its hotel, stores, and police quarters, was on the other side of where the bridge over the river is now. In her girlhood days she saw the walls of Berrima gaol being built, and the gangs working at forming what is now called the main southern road. At that time the whole country to the south of Picton and Camden was in the parish of Sutton Forest, with its old slab church and skillion rooms, in which the clerk lived. In that church the late Mrs Whatman was married to James Ritchie by parson Vincent, and in the churchyard her father and mother, Mr John and Mrs Mary Hollands were buried. The funeral will take place today (Wednesday), and will move from her daughter's residence for the Church of England cemetery, Sutton Forest, where the interment will take place.

- [S23] TROVE, The Southern Mail (Bowral, NSW : 1889 - 1954) Tue 11 Oct 1938, ANOTHER PIONEER GONE. Mr. James Ritchie, of Burrawang, a member of one of the pioneering families of the Berrima District, died in the District Hospital on Thursday at the age of eighty-five years. He was a native of Sutton Forest and his parents were among the first settlers there. Mr. Ritchie followed farming pursuits during his whole life. He left Sutton Forest and went to the South Coast. After residing there for about three years he acquired the property known as "Spring Delight," Burrawang and had resided there for over twenty years until his death. Mr. Ritchie was widely known as one of the best judges of cattle and draught horses in the district. He was a regular exhibitor at shows throughout the Berrima District and South Coast and won numerous prizes. Mr. Ritchie was twice married. His second wife, who survives him, was a Miss Sophia Tucker (error, should be Thompson), of Monaro, and their marriage took place at Sutton Forest fifty-five years ago. Of the large family which survives him, three daughters and five sons are resident in the Berrima District. They are Mrs. Matt Napper (Bowral), Mrs. Joe Smith (Bowral), Mrs. Albert Napper (Burrawang), and Messrs. Mr. Ritchie was born and married at Sutton Forest and his remains were laid to rest in the Church of
England portion of the Sutton Forest Cemetery. The family has the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.
