- [S23] TROVE, Circular Head Chronicle (Stanley, Tas. : 1906 - 1954) Wed 31 Mar 1954, MRS. E. M. SAMPSON. Mrs. Eleanor Mary Sampson, whose death occurred on March 27, at the age of 78, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Reid, and was born at Robbins Island, which was leased by the Reid family for a period of 40 years. Mrs. Sampson had been an invalid for many years, and was bed-ridden for the last ten years of her life. As a young woman she won many prizes for horse-riding at Irishtown gymkhanas, and rode in the parade at Stanley held to celebrate the relief of Mafeking in the South African War. Of a kindly and sympathetic nature, the late Mrs. Sampson worked tirelessly in nursing those stricken by the epidemic of pneumonic influenza which followed World War I, and was a keen worker for the Red Cross. She is survived by her brothers, Messrs. James Reid (Alcomie) and Chas. Reid (Smithton). A brother, William B., and a sister, Louise, predeceased her. The funeral service, at the Irishtown cemetery on Monday, was conducted by the Rev. B. D. Allen. The chief mourners were the widower, Mr. Maurice Sampson, brothers and foster son, Mr. Owen Ollington. The carriers were Messrs. R. B., Don., L. S. and Clarence (Dick) Reid (nephews), and the pallbearers Messrs. L. F. Beacom, L. W. Brooks, H. H. Kay and Vern. Boote. Among the many floral tributes were those from :—President and members Smithton Club, Loyal Smithton I.O.O.F Lodge, Smithton Harbour Trust, management and directors Duck River Butter Factory, Past Grand Masters of Loyal Table Cape I.O.O.F.
