Biography
Birth | 1675 | William Hepburn was born in 1675 in Forfar, Scotland.1 |
Marriage | 24 August 1694 | He and Isobell Lessels were married on 24 August 1694 in Arngask, Fifeshire, Scotland.2 |
Death | 12 April 1717 | He died on 12 April 1717 at age ~42 in Fowlis Wester, Perthshire, Scotland.3 |
Note | | The Rev William Hepburn was born around 1675 and died 12 April 1717 at Fowlis Wester in Perthshire while still the minister there. He was aged around 44. Apparently he had been indisposed for about two weeks because there were no sermons preached on the two sabbaths before his death. He received his M.A. at St Andrews on 22 July 1693. He was ordained on 31 March 1697 and became Minister of the Gospel at Fowlis Wester in Perthshire. "There was no sermon there from 11 September to 30 October 1715 in respect that Hepburn, with other ministers about, had gone to Stirling on the approach of Mar's army from the north. The English had landed at Peterhead in 1715 and had advanced as far south as Scone accompanied by a small force under the Earl of Mar. William is said to be a direct descendant of the Fourth Earl of Bothwell. William presumably had a brother Robert, the great grand uncle Captain Robert Hepburn made mention of in his own hand writing on the Title Page of a volume of the Psalms of David written in French. The volume was a present to Captain Hepburn from his father and records in his own hand writing the following details. "My great grandfather the Reverend William Hepburn Minister of Fowlis Perthshire. "My great grand uncle Robert Hepburn Esq. of Keith East Lothian Scotland. "A present from my father Wm. Hepburn Esq., my grandfather the Reverend Patrick Hepburn Booth (sic?) Minister of Aytoun Berwickshire Scotland. "(signed)R.W.Hepburn." William Hepburn was the eleventh minister of the Parish Church of Fowlis Wester since the reformation in 1507. He served from 1697 to 1717. Like many other branches of the Hepburn family family folklore claims descendancy from James Hepburn the Fourth Earl of Bothwell. A link has yet to be proved. Refer also to the brief guide to Fowlis Wester Kirk and the tourist brochures for Fowlis Wester, Crieff, Comrie, St Fillans and Loch Earn in Perthshire. |
