- [S23] TROVE, Launceston Examiner 7 Dec 1899, OBITUARY - MR. W. F. WATHEN.
After a lingering illness Mr. William Fowler Wathen has joined the great majority. The sad event took place at his residence, 162 Charles-street, yesterday, and was not unexpected. Deceased was in his 78th year. He was a native of England, his birthplace being Wootton, a Gloucestershire village. He came out to the colony early in life as tutor, instructor, and chaplain on board a government ship, and had been in Tasmania for the long period of 60 years. Prior to receiving that appointment he had had teaching experience in the famous "Bluecoat" school, and on arriving in the colony was offered, and accepted, a post under the Education Department. For a time he was settled in Hobart, but then came north, 22 of his over 30 years' good service in this capacity being passed in the city of Launceston. He then retired. In more ways than one Mr. Wathen was a useful citizen. He was an active worker at the very inception of the Mechanics' Institute, and for 52 years its secretary, a position from which he only recently retired on account of failing health. He and the Hon. Adye Douglas were made life members of the institute in recognition of their splendid labours on its behalf, and now only the veteran Parliamentarian remains. Years ago Mr. Wathen was a very active member of St. Paul's Church, and was largely instrumental in founding the St. John's Lodge. He was also connected with the dispensary. He took the keenest interest in politics, and spent three years in the Municipal Council. Indeed, no public body was considered complete without the "heckling" of him who is now gone. He leaves a widow and large family to mourn their loss. One of his sons is a journalist in New Zealand, Mr. W. A. Wathen. Another, Mr. Charles Wathen, is in business in this city, while Mr. F. Wathen is located at Zeehan, and Mr. H. Wathen at Waratah. His daughters number six. The funeral will leave his late residence to-morrow, at 3.30 p.m. - [S23] TROVE, Zeehan and Dundas Herald 9 Dec 1899, At Rest. Our obituary notices contain the announcement of the death of the father of one of our leading tradesmen, which took place at Launceston on Wednesday evening - Mr William Fowler Wathen, who had had a long illness consequent on general debility. The deceased was widely known throughout Launceston, and was much respected as one who took a keen interest in all that appertained to the best interests of the northern capital. Mr Wathen, who had reached the advanced age of 78 years, was a colonist of nearly 60 years, he having been appointed by the Imperial Government tutor and instructor to one of the convict ships. He was born at Wotton-on-the-Hedge, near Gloucestershire, After his arrival he was appointed to the first Government school, which was located in the south. Then he was removed to the Elizabeth street school, Launceston, in which be remained as head teacher for 22 years, Mr Leach and then the late Mr Kidd succeeding him. Mr Wathen retired after over 30 years' service, and since then he has displayed a remarkable activity in everything that would promote the welfare of the city. He took a keen interest in municipal affairs, and was possessed of advanced ideas that were caviare to the general. On the occasion of his first appearing as a candidate for civic honors the numbers which were recorded in his favor were exceedingly few, but he made several attempts afterwards, and each time he had gained in popular favor, until eventually he was returned with a substantial vote. When he had appeared at the hustings previously to thank those who had voted for him he was in the habit of making a characteristic speech. It contained few words, was honest in purpose, and always appropriate. In fact, it was the impression that Mr Wathen meant well gaining currency that eventually led to his return. He was always a progressive man in municipal affairs, one of the main planks of his platform he advocated being the ward system. When he entered the Council Chamber he composed a minority of one on most of the questions of the hour, and as he was a man possessed of strong convictions the opposition he received had an irritating effect on one at that time well advanced in years. When his term of office was out he retired, and since then he has contented himself by annually frequenting the meetings of candidates, of whom he always asked a variety of questions, many of which were posers. Mr Wathen was, with the exception of Mr Adye Douglas, M.L.C., the last representative of the founders of the Launceston Mechanics' Institute, and for 52 years he held the position of secretary. He has left a large family of children, all grown up. His eldest son, Mr W. A. W. Wathen at present occupies a position on the staff of the "Dunedin Herald," New Zealand. Mr Chas. Wathen is in business in Launceston, Mr H. W. Wathen a jeweller at Waratah, and Mr F. W. Wathen, jeweller, Zeehan . There are six daughters, the eldest being Mrs Joshua Beaumont. Mr Osman Wathen, Charles street, is a brother of deceased, and another brother, Sir Charles Wathen, was a prominent man in Bristol, where he occupied the position of Mayor. The funeral took place at the English Cemetery, Launceston, yesterday.

She and her husband lived together at Pontville, where they had a store, until last January. Her husband thrashed her and shut her out, said petitioner. She visited the store on February 15 and Gale was there wearing some of petitioner's clothing. About 2 a.m. on February 29, petitioner said that with her daughter, her son in-law and another man, she visited her former home. She broke a front window. Her daughter pulled back the blind and torches were flashed into the room. Respondent and Gale were in bed. Corroborative evidence was given by Mrs. Phyllis May Atkins daughter of petitioner, and Ronald George Atkins, son-in-law of petitioner. A decree nisl was granted.
