- [S23] TROVE, Ovens and Murray Advertiser (Beechworth, Vic. : 1855 - 1955) Sat 24 Jul 1909, TALLANGATTA. One of the oldest residents of the Mitta Mitta district, Mr. Edward Lord, died on Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock in Tallangatta, at his residence, at the age of sixty two years. The news cast a gloom over the town, as his death was not expected. Although Mr. Lord was under Dr. Patterson's care some months ago he quite recovered from the complaint for which he was treated. He was driving about only last Monday in the best of health. He leaves a widow and a large grown-up family. Mr. Lord has been one of the leading farmers of the Milta Mitta River. He has sent as many as £100 worth of pigs a year to the Melbourne market. There is great sympathy felt for the family by all who know them.

- [S23] TROVE, The Albury Banner and Wodonga Express (NSW : 1871 - 1938) Fri 22 Jan 1926, Obituary. — The death has taken place of one of Mitta Mitta 's oldest residents in the person of Mr. James Lord, of Evergreen Farm, Mitta, at the ripe old age of 76 years. The deceased, who was born in 1850, in Lancashire, England, at the age of eight years started to work in a cotton mill there, and remained for 3½ years. He then, with the rest of his family, sailed for Australia in his mother's care, his father having emigrated several years before to the goldfields at Chiltern. The late Mr.Lord's first employment was driving a'hawker's waggon through the Riverina, where he encountered the notorious bushranger Morgan, who stole his horses, after which trip Mr. Lord decided in favour of the goldfields. In 1867 the family secured land on the Mitta River, near the present Stockyard Flat, this property being sold later and land obtained at Mount Minerva, on the River Darling near Wilcannia. Owing to drought conditions, however, this place was sold and the Lords returned to the Mitta, where they settled down and Mr. Lord remained until his death. In the early seventies Mr. Lord used to pack flour, which was then £5 a bag and often unprocurable, to Glen Willis, and later in company with the late John Cardwell he carted supplies on a bullock waggon from Wodonga to Mitta Mitta. |In 1896 Towong Shire Council was formed and a road was constructed along the river bank from the Stockyard to Reid's Creek, Mr. Lord being the first person to drive a conveyance along this much needed highway. The deceased gentleman in conjunction with the late Edward and William Lord (brothers), William Green, and John Cardwell founded and became trustees of the Methodist Church at Mitta Mitta. Mr. Lord's death is mourned by a large circle of friends as well as a widow and grown-up family of five sons and four daughters, Miss Mary Lord, who recently sailed to do missionary, work in India being a daughter. His funeral was largely attended; his remains being interred in the Mitta Mitta cemetery, Mr. E. Stow reading the Methodist burial service.
