   Mrs. Louisa Annie Elmer, widow of the late Mr. Edward James Elmer, had reached the age of 88 years when she died at the residence of Mr. David Smith, East Devonport, on Sunday. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Diprose, formerly of Lower Barrington, and a member of one of the best known pioneering families of the North-West. She had been confined to her bed during the past 18 months, and was cared for by her grand-daughter (Mrs. David Smith). The late Mrs. Elmer was the mother of 14 children, and of these seven survive. They are Mrs. Richardson, East Devonport; Mrs. Knowles, Queensland; Mrs. Costello, Moltema; Mrs. Dell, Devonport; Mrs Smith, Wynyard; and Messrs. George and Leonard Elmer. Three sisters-Mrs, J, Smith, Mrs. D. Smith, and Mrs. Cox, of Launceston and two brothers-Messrs. Chas. Diprose (Ulverstone) and S. Diprose (East Coast)-also survive her. There are 66 grandchildren, 80 great grandchildren
   and nine great-great-grandchildren.

   The story of the life of Francis John Elmer, who met his death at Quamby Brook, near Deloraine, on Sunday, following upon a quarrel with Thomas Blegg, reveals that he was a lonely man, fond of prospecting and the bush. He was 63 years of age, and would not forsake the charms of the bush when his sister (Mrs. F. A. Smith, of Devonport) asked him to make his home with her. Mr. James Scott, of Deloraine, who knew Elmer well, states that he was a remarkably fine shot with the rifle or gun, and also an expert trapper. His passion, however, was prospecting. He resided for about 13 years at Quamby Brook, and lived a lonely life. It is stated that he had been complaining of ill health, and that his nerves appeared to be shattered. Believing that there was copper in the mountains at Quamby Brook, Mr. Elmer had sunk a shaft three miles away from his house, and the story of the lonely prospector's enthusiasm was revealed by Mr. Scott, who stated that at Elmer's request he associated himself with the mine which Elmer had for some time been working. The shaft had been put down about 40 feet, and a drive made of two chains. With Mr. Scott's help the drive was extended to four chains. Fearing the existence of poisonous gases in the shaft, they had burned some bark at the base.
   The heat and smoke drew forth the gas and formed a stronger one, and when Mr. Scott descended he found Elmer prostrate at the bottom. Mr. Scott rescued his mate by winding him to the top on the windlass.

   The funeral of the late Mrs. Frances Annie Holloway Smith, [they were married in 1899] who passed away on Thursday last, took place on Friday afternoon, the place of interment, being the new public cemetery at Wynyard. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Elmer, of Deloraine, and lived the greater portion of her younger life on the East Coast. She resided at Barringtton and Wynyard for a number of years, and after being at Devonport for a time returned to Wynyard about 12 months ago, and has since been an inmate of a nursing home. The deceased was twice married, her first husband being the late John Alexander Holloway, whom she married at Falmouth in 1884 ; the second husband was the late John Smith, of Barrington. Deceased leaves four sisters - Mrs. Costello, Moltema; Mrs. Richardson, Devonport; Mrs. Dell, Devonport; and Mrs. A. Knowles, Queensland; brothers are Mr. George Elmer, of Montumana, and Mr. Leonard Elmer. Daughters of the first union are Mesdames I. O. Smith (Yollo), J. H. Knowles (St. Helens), and C. C. The burial service was read by Captain Preston, of the Salvation Army, of which deceased was a keen follower for many years. Two of her favorite hymns, "A Land That Is Fairer Than Day," and "Abide With Me," were sung. The late Mrs. Haberle was born at the Needles, and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Elmer. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends. The chief mourners were Mr. Charles Haberle, widower: two daughters, Mrs. A. Costello, and Mrs. E. Lamprell: and son, Harold. Deceased left a family of five daughters and two sons, the daughters being Mrs. Costello (Flowerdale), Mrs. Short (New South Wales), Mrs. Warne and Mrs. Bell (Victoria), and Mrs. Lamprell (East Devonport). The sons are Messrs. Harold Haberle (Wesley Vale), and Herbert Haberle (Victoria). The carriers were Messrs. Mervyn and Aubrey Haberle and two sons-in-law, Messrs. A. Costello and E. Lamprell.
