- [S23] TROVE, Mount Alexander Mail (Vic. : 1854 - 1917) Fri 21 Apr 1865, AWFULLY SUDDEN DEATH. Yesterday afternoon, a miner, named James Partington, died in a manner so sudden and unexpected as to justify a notice of the event. Partington, who has resided on Inglewood for the last four years, had been suffering for some time from disease of the heart, and for the last fortnight he had been under the care of Dr Radcliffe, as an out-door patient of the Hospital. Yesterday morning he waited on the doctor as usual, and expressed his gratification at having obtained, a job of work. The doctor cautioned him against the effects of violent exertion in his state of health, but Partington was too anxious on his family's account to forego the chance of earning a little meney. He appears to have borrowed a shovel from a friend, and on his way home he called at the house of a Mrs Wilson, residing at the back of Brooke-street. Here he sat for some time, telling of his ailments, the distress endured by his wife and family in consequence, and the probability of his being able to earn some money. After the lapse of half an hour he got up to go home, and whilst walking from the door was engaged in lighting his pipe. Just as he reached the door way he fell backwards, and expired within a very few minutes. He was immediately conveyed to the George Hotel, and the sorrowful news taken to his wife, whose grief may be easily imagined. He leaves behind him five young children, the youngest only a fortnight old, and there is little doubt but the care and anxiety consequent upon not being able to provide for his wife and family
hastened the unfortunate man's death. It would appear that the family have often been without the common necessaries of life, and the death of the husband and father has left them actually and positively helpless. This is not an isolated case of dire poverty existing in our midst, and it behoves every one having
enough meat, drink, and clothing to take steps for the alleviation of the miserable novertv with which some of our fellows are afflicted. — Inglewood - [S2] Tasmania Registry of B, D & M, He is referred to in the birth certificate of his son
