- [S23] TROVE, Advocate (Burnie, Tas. : 1890 - 1954) Sat 26 Mar 1927, The Late Mr. Harry Elmer - A FINE OLD SPORT.
(By "The Wild Irishman.'*)
"Simon Yates there pass the pack,
And let's be merry to-night my men;
For those were the days when our beards were black.
And I like to think of them now and again."
One by one the fine old pioneers of Latrobe pass out into the Land of Shadows, and that fine old sport, Harry Elmer, is the latest. Many years ago, in the old town, deceased was greatly interested in anything that savored of sport, from boxing to ping-pong. In his young days it took a good man to "put it over" the smart young Launcestonian with gloves or with the "bare 'uns," and at the time when Harry Elmer was born 84 years ago Launceston was a rough place, and right here I might relate an incident as told me by Mr. Elmer many years ago. Somewhere about 50 years ago he came along thc Coast, amongst, others, with a string of racehorses. On the night of the races at Latrobe there was a bully who was taking pot-shots at all and sundry until he struck young Harry, who put paid to his account. " Brownnie" Elmer, who now lies sleeping in the silent city on the hill to the east of Latrobe, was a son of the deceased, and his name will ever be remembered as one of tho best ruck men the Coast has ever seen, and although well able to take his part with the best of them, he was a clean and gentlemanly player. Another son, Arthur ("Jock"), was well-known as a clever rider when only a boy, and at one time, at Latrobe, won four races in he one afternoon on the game old Barrington, a feat never equalled before or since on the old course, and I am glad to say I was there and witnessed it some 35 years ago. Lead bags were scarce in those days, and to make up enough dead weight, stones were gathered and placed in a horse rug in front of the game little rider. The other sons are William and Leslie. The daughters are Mesdames Herpick and Auders, Hobart, and Mrs. R. Dutton, Burnie. One of Mr. Elmer's grandsons, A. Elmer, is now a member of the South Melbourne Football Club, and is expected to do great things this season. I am sure all Latrobeites will send their heartfelt sympathy to the relatives.
