  3. [S23] TROVE, Advocate (Burnie, Tas. : 1890 - 1954) Tue 14 Sep 1954, Mr. W. T. Badcock - Mr. Walter Thomas Badcock, of Exton, died at his residence "Hemerton" on Wednesday morning. Mr. Badcock was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Badcock, of Pleasant Hills, Glenore. He was born at Glenore and moved to Exton about 16 years ago, where he farmed until his death. Mr. Badcock was of a happy nature and popular with all. He was a keen supporter of anything put forward for the good of the district and was the chief mover in having the automatic exchange installed. For several years he was secretary of the Public Hall Committee and of the Exton water scheme. Mr. Badcock, a loyal supporter of the Methodist Church, was for many years secretary of the Whitemore Methodist Church Trust. He is survived by his widow and son, William Ernest Badcock, B.Sc., of Maribyrnong, Victoria. The private funeral took place at Deloraine General Cemetery. The service was conducted by the Rev. W. Duncan Kennedy, of Westbury. Pall bearers were Messrs. T. and R. Walker, C. J. and M. E. Boon; chief mourners were Mr. W. E. Badcock (son), Messrs. S. and M. Badcock (brothers), Mesdames E. Heazlewood, H. Smith and Mrs. C. Walker (sisters). Many floral tributes were received.

EMILY WATSON Deep regret was felt at Meander when it became known that Mrs. Emily May Watson, a highly esteemed resident of Meander, had died in Launceston. Mrs. Watson had been ill for some months. Mrs. Watson was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Elmer, and had lived in the Meander. district all her life. She was aged 62 years. She leaves a widower, Mr. Frank Watson, two sons, Messrs. Carl Watson (Victoria) and Ross Watson (Meander), and one daughter, Mrs. L. Youd (Launceston). The funeral took place at the Church of England Cemetery, Mleander, on Wednesday, and was largely attended. The chief mourners were Mr. Frank Watson (husband), Messrs. C. and R. Watson (sons), E. Elmer (brother), L. Youd (son-in-law), I. Youd (grandson), Miss Mary Elmer (niece), Messrs. A. Watson and B. Whiteley (brothers in-law), Messrs. V. Watson, L. and B, Elmer and A. Whiteley (nephews). The burial service was read by Rev. A. E. Chamberlain. The carriers were Messrs. A. Stagg, R. Johnston and W. and J. Boxhall. There were many beautiful floral tributes. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. B. J. Cameron, of Deloraine.

  2. [S23] TROVE, The West Australian (Perth, WA : 1879 - 1954) Thu 3 Mar 1927, THE LATE MR. JOHN H. GRACIE. The late Mr. John Hugh Gracie, a well-known resident of East Fremantle for the past 32 years, died on February 21 at his late residence, Kensington, Canning-road, East Fremantle, after a long illness. Mr. Gracie. who was 72 years of age, was born in Tasmania, and prior to coming to this State was chief brewer at the Cascade Brewery, in Hobart. On his arrival in Fremantle he founded the Castlemaine Brewery in partnership with Mr. Sleigh. Later Mr. W. H. Walkley purchased Mr. Sleigh's interest in the business, and Messrs. Gracie and Walkley then absorbed the Phoenix Brewery. In 1900 the business was floated, and became the Castlemaine Brewery, Ltd., and Mr. Gracie was appointed managing director, a position he retained until his retirement in 1912. On relinquishing this post he was presented with an illuminated address as a mark of esteem by the employees of the company. He was a keen horticulturalist, and was considered to have at his residence one of the finest collections of ferns, palms and shrubs in the Commonwealth. During the stay of the member's of the Association for the Advancement of Science in this State, the party made a special visit to East Fremantle to inspect Mr. Gracie's exclusive collection, and congratulated him on his work in that direction. The funeral cortege moved from his late residence on February 23 and proceeded to the Fremantle Cemetery, where the remains were interred in the Church of England portion. The Rev. G. R. Holland officiated at the graveside, in the presence of a large gathering. The chief mourners were Messrs. J. Durkin and A. J. Lea Holt (brothers-in-law), E. Rex and E. D. Oliver (nephews), and Alan Rex (grand-nephew). The pallbearers were Dr. A. H. Gibson and Messrs. W. Lohoar, senr., and junr., H. Flindell, W. J. Arnold, F. W. Martin, E. M. Blythe, and G. Stevens. The Castlemaine Brewery, Ltd., was represented by Mr. E. Hicks. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Arthur E. Davies and Co.
