- [S23] TROVE, The North Western Advocate and the Emu Bay Times 2 March 1904, DUNORLAN -- During the present month several old and respected colonists have passed away, and at about 9 a.m. last Friday another joined the great majority, viz., Mrs Joseph Roberts, of Slate Quarry, Dunorlan, at the advanced age of 79 years and nine months. The deceased lady was born in Thetford, Norfolk, England, in the year 1824, and arrived in Tasmania when about seven years old with her parents, the late Mr and Mrs John Elmer, in 1831. They landed at Circular Head, and almost immediately went to or near Woolnorth, as Mr Elmer came out for the V.D.L. Co. It was a wild, bleak region, and the accommodation for the new arrivals was so disappointing that they felt completely disheartened, but seeing that it was no use to make matters worse they soon settled down to the customs of Van Diemen's Land, which was then the home of escaped convicts, bushrangers and blacks, and human life was not counted dear by such desperadoes. Mrs Roberts often related the most startling and thrilling stories of things that came under her own observation among the handful of settlers on the coast of that time. She had a remarkably good memory, and one could sit for hours listening as she described the blacks, their customs and weapons. She well remembered the tyranny of the manager that caused Messrs Coleman, Hay, etc., to undertake that remarkable journey that has become a part of the early history of our ' island home.' If the writer remembers correctly she told him that those respected old colonists, the Messrs Rouse, so well known in the Burnie district, arrived at Emu Bay about Christmas, 1842; Four years before this, in 1838, the deceased went to reside in Launceston, and on one occasion about that time saw a bullock team stuck in the mud in Brisbane street, it being unmetalled, as most of the streets were in those early days. She saw Robinson, who secured the last of the aboriginals, and the clever Sydney black who assisted him. For some years she lived with the late Rev Chas. Price and his family and she saw on several occasions, the celebrated explorer Sir John Franklin, who was not too proud to pat the little lassie on the head and speak a few kindly words to her when visiting at Mr Price's. The deceased lady arrived in Tasmania the month of February and passed away in the same. She was a staunch teetotaller and a consistent Christian. Much sympathy is felt for the aged and highly, respected husband, who is at present an inmate of the Launceston General Hospital, and was too ill to see his wife when apprised of her approaching end. She also leaves four daughters, viz., Mrs G. W. Ellis, of ' Aldersyde,' West Pine ; Miss Harriet Roberts, well known at Burnie ; Mrs James Harrison, Dunorlan; and Mrs Samuel Grimbley, Launceston. She was the eldest of a large family, of whom three brothers and three sisters are still living, viz., Mrs Badcock, sen., Launceston ; Mrs Johnson, Latrobe ; Mrs Phillips, Dunorlan ; and Messrs James, Henry and George Elmer. The late Mrs William Gracie, of Hobart, was a sister, also the late Mrs W. Purton and two other sisters who died many years ago.

- [S23] TROVE, Examiner (Launceston, Tas. : 1900 - 1954), Tue 29 Oct 1907., Westbury. - It is not often our quiet little town is saddened by the appearance of two funerals, not only on the same day, but at the same hour and in the same cemetery. Such was the case on Friday last on the occasion of the burial of the late Mr. William Purton, of Westbury, and the late Mrs. Jago, of Exton, both funerals being largely attended. In the case of the former the funeral service was conducted in the Methodist Church, Westbury, and at the grave by the Rev. J. Lowe, whilst at that of Mrs. Jago, Mr. A. K. Chapman officiated at the grave.
The late William Purton, who was well-known and highly respected throughout the Westbury district, was the sixth son of the late Mr. Shadrach Purton, and was born at a place called MInute's Forest near Bracknell, in the year 1836, his father having come from Ross and taken up his residence there in that year. The Purtons are a very old and well-known family. The deceased father did active service in the battle of Waterloo. For many years the Purtons lived in the Adelphi district, and subsequently removed early in the fifties to Exton, and occupied the estate known as Berresford, then the property of the late Rev. Samuel Martin. The deceased William Purton was a well-known figure among stockbreeders. For upwards of 40 years he was engaged with stock on the Cheshunt estate, but the last few years he had been similarly employed on the Westfield estate for Mr. R. C. Field. The deceased leaves a widow and a large family of sons and daughters to mourn their loss. Much sympathy is also felt for the bereaved husband and family of small children of the late Mrs. Jago.
