  5. [S87] Newspapers.com, Yorkshire Gazette - Saturday 22 July 1820, PATRICK MURPHY, a private in the Dragoons, was charged with robbing Edward Wallis, surgeon, of York, on the King's highway. Mr. Wallis was called to Fulford, upon urgent business, on the evening of the 7th of April. He left York soon after eleven o'clock. The night was dark, and when he arrived near Fulford, the mare he rode began to slacken her pace, and immediately a man seized the reins and demanded his money. The robber was dressed in light coloured trowsers [sic], a foraging cap, a light coloured coat, and no waistcoat. Mr. Wallis, though armed only with a stick, made a most courageous resistance, but being pulled off horseback, he was overpowered, and deprived of his watch and money; but not till he had inflicted several severe blows upon the head of his antagonist. Evidence was adduced to shew [sic], that the prisoner, dressed nearly as Mr. Wallis described, left the barracks, which are near Fulford a short time before the robbery, and came in soon after; and that his forage cap was bloody ; a wound was also observed on his head about a week after the transaction. He subsequently offered the watch, seal, and key for sale to several of his comrades; and to two of them he told the secret of his guilt. The Jury found him Guilty.
