  4. [S23] TROVE, The Courier (Hobart, Tas. : 1840 - 1859) Sat 28 May 1859, IN the obituary notices of names connected with this colony in Victoria, we have omitted to chronicle that of James Thomson, Esq., M.A., long time a resident of Hobart Town, and for many years Registrar of the Comptroller-General's Department, who died at his station, Gumeralla, near Belfast, on the 22nd March last. Mr. Thomson was a very old colonist, and came to this colony upwards of thirty years since. He was connected with many respectable Scotch families which emigrated at the same period, whose offshoots are now spread far and wide over the broad lands of Victoria. Mr. Thomson for many years conducted a school in Hobart Town, where some of our colonial notabilities first imbibed letters— amongst others the present Sir Richard Dry, Mr. John Dunn, jun., and Mr. W. Race Allison. He was a sound classical scholar, and a pure and idiomatic writer of the English of the Saxon type, which he affected and cultivated, having, besides, a great veneration for all those Saxon institutions which have been engrafted upon the British Constitution. He often carried his views upon such points to an extreme, which gave him an air of pedantry and disputatiousness ; but underlying these peculiarities of manner was a fund of strong common-sense and clear judgement, united to the kindest and most noble nature. Mr. Thomson obtained an honorary degree of M.A. from St. Andrew's University, for a pamphlet published by him in this colony, wherein he proved conclusively that the status of the Church of Scotland in the colonies was in every respect equal to the Church of England, according to the Articles of the Union of the two countries. This pamphlet, being circulated in Canada, led to important results in that country, and Mr. Thomson had, in consequence, an honorary degree conferred upon him from St. Andrew's. Mr.Thomson was upon several occasions a contributor to the local Press, and greatly aided the proprietress of the Colonial Times, when left in embarrassed circumstances, to conduct that journal. He lost his appointment as Registrar of the Probation Department in resisting the authority of the late Comptroller-General to remove the indents, of which he had the custody as Registrar, into the hands of the Superintendent of the Penitentiary, Mr.Boyd; Mr.Thomson contending that these indents were the sole warrants or authorities by which prisoners of the Crown could be retained. He was, in our opinion, right in principle, but wrong in not obeying the mandate of his superior officer, however erroneous that may have been. Mr. Thomson subsequently went to Port Phillip, having a station in conjunction with his brother, and represented the district of Colac in the first Victorian Parliament. He married afterwards, and went to live in the Portland District. He died rather suddenly, and leaves behind a widow and child, for whom he has made adequate provision, the bulk of his fortune being divided amongst the children of his near relative, Mr. Macrobie, as he had always led them to anticipate.
