LAUNCESTON, Wednesday. - The death occurred at his residence, 189 St. John street, Launceston, yesterday morning, of Mr. Walter Henry Ferrall, aged 87 years. The late Mr. Ferrall was born in Essex, England, and arrived in Tasmania when a young lad. His father died on the voyage out. He was educated at Mr. Leach's school, which was attached to St. John's Church. He served his apprenticeship as a butcher with Mr. Josiah Powell, and was for some years associated with the late Mr. Samuel Ferrall in the Elizabeth-street butchery. He commenced business on his own account in Charles street. Of a benevolent disposition, he took a keen interest in charitable organisations, and was for more than 30 years president of the Launceston Benevolent Society. He was a foundation member of the Launceston Agricultural and Pastoral Society, and was for many years its treasurer. He was a director of the Mt. Bischoff Tin. Mining Co. for a number of years. Mr. Ferrall was a member of St. Andrew's Masonic Lodge and a foundation member of St. John's Lodge; he was also a member of the M.U.l.O.O.F. He served several years as an alderman of the city of Launceston, and was Mayor for two years in succession. He was a keen bowler, and was a foundation member of the A.B.C. Club. He assisted in the formation of the Invermay Bowling Club, and later formed the South Launceston Club, and was its president for many years. Within the last month his son's wife, his brother Samuel (aged 91 years) and a nephew died. These deaths prostrated him, and he took to his bed and gradually sank.
