- [S23] TROVE, The Braidwood Dispatch and Mining Journal Wed 26 Mar 1902, Fatal Road Accident.— Mr William Hollands, the contractor for the Nerriga mail, after delivering his mails at the Braidwood Post Office on Wednesday afternoon last, was returning to his home off the Goulburn road about four miles out of town. He left about half-past 6, but instead of turning off the road to his farm he travelled on, and nothing more was heard of him until next morning at about 10 o'clock, when Mr. G. A. Bassingthwaighte came across him on the Larbert road, near his (Mr. Bassingthwaighte's) place and about ten miles from Braidwood. He was then standing against the fence on the side of the road very much injured and bleeding in the face and head, which was much cut and bruised. He was only half conscious. The buggy was upset on the road some three miles from where he was found, which distance he had walked. The vehicle was greatly
damaged and appeared to have been dragged some distance before the horses freed themselves. Mr. Hollands was evidently thrown out when the buggy capsized, and from the internal injuries he received it would appear that one of the wheels went over him, and from the fact of his being found with a portion of one of the reins in his hand it is probable that he was dragged a little way along the road also. Mr. Bassingthwaighte gave him a drink of milk from the pail he was carrying, and lost no time in getting a horse and driving him home. After Mr. Hollands' horses got free from the buggy after the accident they returned home. Mrs. Hollands when her husband did not return home as expected, started out with several of her sons and daughters to look for him along the road, but their search was of no avail, as none of them went so far along the Larbert Road as where he was found, although Mrs. Hollands it is said was within
some 100 yards of the place where he was found and despairing of finding him in that direction turned back. The poor fellow when brought home was in a very low state from the injuries he had received and being out all night, during which there was a sharp frost, and it was very cold. Dr. Cummings was called in to attend him, but had no hope of his recovery from the first time he saw him, as he was laboring from severe inflammation of the stomach, where the wheel had
passed over him, and where he was principally injured, and where he was pitched against the bank. Tha deceased died at 5 o'clock on Sunday afternoon
after suffering agonised pain. He leaves a widow and family of ten sons and daughters, who were all at home when he expired, one of the sons having come from Sydney. A magisterial inquiry was held as to the circumstances surrounding his death at his late residence by the District Coroner on Monday afternoon, when the particulars as narrated were given in evidence, and a finding of accidental death was returned. The deceased was some 54 or 56 years of age and a native of Nerriga, where his parents were among the earliest settlers in that part of the district. He was a man much respected, and his untimely end is generally regretted, and much sympathy is felt for the family. His funeral took place yesterday afternoon and was very numerously attended, the Rev. J. S. Dobson, who saw him on several occasions prior to his decease, conducting the service at the grave.
